The Supreme Court of Victoria’s 2023-24 annual report was tabled in Parliament on 28 November 2024.
Some points of interest from across the Court include:
- The Court of Appeal handed down 147 criminal judgments and 83 civil judgments.
- Fast-tracking to the Criminal Division has seen the overall duration of a case reduce.
- Finalisations in the Commercial Court increased by more than 36 per cent.
- The Personal Injury List continues to be the largest Common Law Division list with initiations increasing by 26 per cent. More than 50 per cent of initiations were medical negligence claims.
- Associate Judges’ Chambers hearings in Practice Court and Specialist Lists were up 33 per cent.
- Judicial Mediation saved 1081 hearing days, with Costs Court mediation saving a further 527 hearing days.
“This report demonstrates the dedication of the judiciary and staff to the core business of the Court in an increasingly challenging fiscal environment,” Chief Justice Anne Ferguson said.
“Through our values of accessibility, integrity, transparency, innovation and change, we have continued to build on our past achievements and drive improvements for court users.
“We will continue to adapt and evolve our operations, and we thank everyone, including judicial officers, staff, the legal community, Court Services Victoria and Court users, who continued to help us do so in 2023-24.”
