GENERAL INFORMATION 

The penalty judgment in the matter of Director of Public Prosecutions v The Herald & Weekly Times Pty Ltd & Ors - S ECI 2019 01228 (George Pell media contempt proceeding) was handed down by the Honourable Justice John Dixon of the Supreme Court of Victoria on Friday, 4 June. 

The trial in this matter commenced on Monday, 9 November 2020. 

On 1 February 2021, the parties announced that the prosecution had resolved and each corporate respondent pleaded guilty, in respect of each publication for which they were charged, to contempt by breaching a proceeding suppression order. 

A penalty hearing for the respondents adjudged guilty of contempt took place between 10 – 17 February 2021.
