The Court will open the Court of Appeal building to the public on Saturday 28 July, from 10am to 3pm, as part of the Open House Melbourne 2018 festival.
Open House Melbourne provides the public with an opportunity to discover a hidden array of architectural and historic buildings around the city. Across the Open House weekend (this year on 28-29 July 2018) tens of thousands of people come out to celebrate architecture and the city.
This year, the Court is inviting the public to explore the rich architectural heritage of the Court of Appeal building, with staff on hand to explain the role of the Court in Victoria’s justice system.
Significantly, this year marks 125 years since the building was first opened. Originally constructed as offices for the Attorney-General and Crown Law Department, the Court of Appeal building was the home of Crown Law officers, prosecutors and Parliamentary draftsmen up until the 1970s.
As well as self-touring the building, courtrooms and chatting to Court staff, visitors will have the opportunity to attend two information sessions about the Court of Appeal throughout the day.
