New Chief Justice appointed

The Attorney-General, Jaclyn Symes, today announced that Justice Richard Niall will be the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, following the retirement of Chief Justice Anne Ferguson in February next year.

Justice Niall will be sworn in officially as Chief Justice in the new year.

Chief Justice Ferguson has extended her warmest congratulations to Justice Niall.

"Justice Niall brings a wealth of experience to the role and I’m confident the Court is in good hands," Chief Justice Ferguson said.

"I know the Court, the profession and the community will be very well served by this appointment."
