The Supreme Court of Victoria’s Court of Appeal will sit in Mildura this week as part of its regional circuit.
The Court of Appeal is the State’s highest court and hears appeals from the Supreme Court, County Court, Magistrates’ Court and from VCAT.
The Court of Appeal has a long history of sitting in regional centres. This will be the fourth time the Court of Appeal has sat in Mildura since 1997. The Court last sat there in 2009.
While in Mildura, Justice Emilios Kyrou, Justice Karin Emerton and Justice Mark Weinberg, will hear two appeals.
On Thursday, 29 August, the Court will hear an appeal against a conviction for armed robbery arising from a jury trial in the Country Court.
On Friday, 30 August, the Court will hear an appeal against a sentence following a guilty plea in the County Court to two sexual offences.
Justice Kyrou said the Supreme Court was a court for all Victorians.
“Going on circuit across regional Victoria gives the wider Victorian community an opportunity to see how appeal hearings are conducted,” Justice Kyrou said.
“It is also very important for the Court to sit in regional centres like Mildura to listen and learn, and to reaffirm the connection between the Court and community.”
During the visit, the Court of Appeal members will meet with secondary school students, representatives of The Orange Door (a free service for adults, children and young people who are experiencing or have experienced family violence) and local members of the legal profession, including staff from the Mallee office of Victoria Legal Aid and Murray Mallee Community Legal Services, as well as members of the North West Victorian Law Association.
