The Supreme Court of Victoria’s Court of Appeal will sit in Morwell this week as part of its regional circuit.
The Court of Appeal is the State’s highest court and hears appeals from the Supreme Court, County Court, Magistrates’ Court and VCAT.
The Court of Appeal was established in 1995 and has a long history of sitting in regional areas.
The Court usually runs two regional circuits a year, but has increased this to six in 2020 to mark its 25th anniversary.
Justice Stephen Kaye, Justice Terry Forrest and Justice Robert Osborn will hear three appeals during the Latrobe Valley circuit.
On Thursday 12 March, the Court will hear an appeal against sentence for a drug trafficking matter heard in the County Court and an appeal against sentence for manslaughter and recklessly causing serious injury heard in the Supreme Court.
On Friday 13 March, the Court will hear an appeal against conviction by a man found guilty of incest and indecent assault. There is a pseudonym in place on this case to protect the victim.
During the visit, the Court of Appeal Justices will speak to secondary school students and meet with representatives from the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Gippsland Community Legal Service, Gippsland Legal Assistance Forum, and Gippsland Law Association.

The Court of Appeal is a very important part of our legal system, the decisions made on sentencing practice and the interpretation of the law can affect all levels of the legal system and ultimately our society.
The 25th anniversary is an occasion to reflect on the Court of Appeal’s role in the administration of justice in Victoria, an essential aspect of which is its work in the regions.
