Applications for the Victorian Bar’s 2024 Diversity Internship program are open.

The Supreme Court is once again participating in the Victorian Bar’s Diversity Internship program. The program seeks to foster and promote cultural diversity in the profession by providing law students from culturally and racially marginalised backgrounds with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop connections in the legal profession.

The internship runs over three weeks. Students will spend one week with a barrister mentor at the Victorian Bar, plus two one-week rotations at a participating jurisdiction: the Federal Court of Australia, the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of Victoria, the County Court of Victoria, and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

Whilst at the courts or VCAT interns will be based in a judicial officer’s chambers where they will attend hearings with the judicial officer and discuss the cases that they are working on. They will also be involved in assisting with research or administrative tasks.

Last year the Court hosted two law students as part of the inaugural program. University of Melbourne student Hanna Amin was thankful for her week-long placement in Justice Jacinta Forbes’ chambers where she shadowed associates and met with a number of Supreme Court judges.

La Trobe University student Halima Weli, who interned with Associate Justice Ian Irving’s chambers, said the internship had reinforced her commitment to pursuing a career in the law.

This year’s interns will be required to complete their internship between 1–31 October and 11 November to 6 December 2024. Find out more information about the program and how to apply on the Victorian Bar’s website.
